The City of Cedar Rapids is in the process of demolishing approximately 1,200 flood-damaged, residential and commercial structures damaged during the Flood of 2008.
FEMA-Funded Demolitions
After the Flood in 2008, the City worked with FEMA to identify structures to be demolished under their "Imminent Threat" program and Hazard Mitigation Grant Program (HMGP). The FEMA "Imminent Threat" demolitions were completed in 2010 and the City will continue to demolish the remaining HMGP structures as they are acquired.
HUD-Funded Demolitions
Through the Community Development Block Grant Program (CDBG) the City has acquired over 1,000 flood-damaged properties. After acquisition, the program funds the clearing of that property. Demolition for this program began in 2010 and will continue through 2013 as properties are acquired.

Demolition Process

Identify properties that are:
-
Structurally Unsafe – This means the structure has collapsing foundations, floors, walls, roofs or any combination or portions that would make the structure unsafe for entry or human occupancy

Environmentally Hazardous – This means that there are mold, asbestos, HHW (Household Hazardous Waste) or other environmental risks in the structure. This is considered unsafe for human occupancy.

Complete paperwork and submit for reimbursement
