gas station

Two historic gas stations at 1703 and 1711 B Avenue NW, The History Center clipping files.

These are significant historic  gas station structures built in the 1930’s. These are unique in that both adjacent structures have survived. Although the official Lincoln Highway route was a block away, along Johnson Avenue NW, when these were built, most of the automobile traffic preferred to use B Avenue NW between 10th Street and 18th Street NW because of the more level elevation of the road. This created the opportunity to build these early gasoline “filling stations.” The old gas station at 1711 B Avenue has the words “Oil Products” on the exterior facade, but in more recent years, this has been hidden by a hair salon sign. The 1703 B Avenue location was used as a doctor’s office in the 1960’s and early 1970’s. Both have been used as hair salons for many years.
