1942 photo of Art Pennington

This residence (922 5th Street SE) was the longtime home of Art “Superman” Pennington, who played baseball in the 1940s for Negro League teams like the Chicago American Giants and Pittsburgh Crawfords. Pennington played in the American Minor League and with leagues in Cuba, Mexico, Venezuela, and the Dominican Republic before retiring from professional baseball in 1959. He then moved to Cedar Rapids to work for Collins Radio (now Rockwell-Collins) and play for their Manufacturers & Jobbers League team. In the 1960s, he also operated the Home Run Café, once at 1200 5th Street SE. In his later years, Pennington visited schools, baseball parks, and museums, sharing his Negro League experiences.
