Cedar Rapids Historic Markers

1999 photo of museum groundbreaking

The African American Museum of Iowa was founded in 1993 by members of the Mount Zion Baptist Church in Cedar Rapids concerned about a lack of awareness and diversity being taught in the classroom and community. In the span of just a few years, the museum moved from a room in the church to various temporary locations and, finally, to this facility in the heart of Cedar Rapids. The museum is guided by its mission to preserve, exhibit, and teach the African American heritage of Iowa and is dedicated to sharing this legacy with the state of Iowa and beyond.
