Biography:
Shields worked for Quaker Oats in Cedar Rapids for 40 years in a variety of factory positions. He was president of the union the last 15 of those years in a plant that transformed the labor-management arrangement into a partnership. As union president he worked full-time in labor-management relations. We were actual partners in how Quaker conducted business, he explains. When Quaker considered closing the plant in recent years, I played a role in getting it stopped, he says. Shields, now retired from Quaker, is president of the Hawkeye Labor Council, representing 47 local unions in seven counties. Earlier this summer, Shields served as co-chairman of Citizens for a Better Cedar Rapids Vote Home Rule, which put him side-by-side with leaders of the Cedar Rapids Area Chamber of Commerce and others in the successful campaign to change the citys form of government. Im quite proud of the way Ive worked with all the unions in Cedar Rapids and with the Chamber of Commerce and other business interests, he says. I can work with other professional people and still have great respect from union folks.
