2nd Arrest made in Duck Case
CEDAR RAPIDS, IA - November 3, 2009 - A second arrest was made in the Duck case from Bever Park. On November 2, 2009, Detective's arrested Shayne Smalling, 5021-90, of Twenty-nine Palms, CA for Life stock Abuse (Aggravated Misdemeanor) and Criminal Mischief 2nd (Class D Felony). Smalling turned himself in at the Cedar Rapids Police Department and was then taken to the Linn County Jail.
Smalling was the second person to be arrested on these charges. Zachary Kanellis, 12-25-89, of 1269 33 St SE was arrested September 9, 2009
On June 25, 2008, 47 ducks were found dead in the Schucknecht Exhibit at Bever Park. The cages were locked about 5:30 pm on Tuesday, June 24, 2008. When workers arrived on June 25, 2008, at about 7:00 am, they found the building lock had been broken as well as the lock on the cages. It appeared as if all the ducks had been stoned to death.
All criminal charges are merely an accusation and the defendants is presumed innocent until and unless they are proven guilty.
