Greg Eyerly to Take Plunge into Completed Ellis Pool

Cedar Rapids, IA - October 26, 2009 - The City of Cedar Rapids Parks and Recreation Department announces the completion of flood restoration at Ellis Pool. Greg Eyerly, Flood Recovery Director, will celebrate the reopening of another flood affected facility by taking an October plunge into the pool at 12:00 p.m. on Wednesday, October 28. "As a community we have been through a lot together and we have made a lot of progress behind the scenes. It is important that we celebrate each and every success. I plan to jump into the pool on behalf of all the neighbors, citizens and community members that are eagerly awaiting the pool's return next spring" said Eyerly.

Work to restore Ellis Pool began on August 24. Restoration included de-mucking and cleaning of all interior and exterior surfaces, repainting all affected walls, replacement of electrical and chemical feed systems damaged by the flood, and repair and/or replacement of pumps, motors, pressure gauges and the water heater. Doors, frames, hardware and restroom equipment were removed, repainted and replaced. Enhancements include the purchase and installation of shade structures, new posts and rope fencing, and additional interior and exterior painting above flood level. The pool was filled this week to test the mechanical system and will be drained on October 29 for winterization. Ellis Pool has a tentative reopening date (in much warmer weather) the first weekend in June 2010.

Ellis Pool was closed on June 9, 2008, when flood waters prevented access along Ellis Boulevard. Flooding eventually covered the facility with 42 inches of water. The cost of the project is $492,005.
