Dryer Fire at The Spring House Restaurant Contained
A fire early Saturday morning at The Spring House Restaurant, 3980 Center Point Road NE, was contained to a utility room near the back side of the food establishment. Firefighters were called to the restaurant at 12:38 a.m. and arrived on scene to find smoke showing from the back side of the one-story commercial structure.
The initial fire crew on scene made entry through a back door into a wooden addition to the restaurant and found smoke coming from a ventilation screen. Another fire crew made entry through the front door of the restaurant, made their way through the dining room and kitchen, and located a dryer on fire in a utility room towards the back of the dwelling. Firefighters quickly extinguished the burning electrical dryer and contained fire damage to the appliance. There was some charring to the wall next to where the dryer was placed. There was some light smoke damage to the kitchen area of the restaurant.
The restaurant closed at 8:30 p.m. on Friday night and the last employee left about an hour later. The fire originated from the electric dryer in the utility room. The appliance is typically used to dry employee uniforms and towels. The exact cause of the fire is underdetermined at this time.
The Spring House Restaurant is owned by Loren and Lois Schmit, as well as Lester and Jill Schmitz, all of Cedar Rapids.
The restaurant was closed at the time of the fire and no one was injured.
No further information is available at this time.
