Statutes enforced by the commission


The Cedar Rapids Civil Rights Commission (CRCRC), Iowa Civil Rights Commission (ICRC) and the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) enforce eight federal, state and local laws which prohibit job discrimination by private employers, labor organizations and/or state and local government agencies. They are:

  • The Civil Rights Act of 1964 -- Title VII
    Prohibits employment discrimination on the basis of race, color, sex, religion, creed or national origin.

  • The Civil Rights Act of 1991 -- CRA
    A bill to amend the Civil Rights Act of 1964 to strengthen and improve Federal civil rights laws, to provide for damages in cases of intentional employment discrimination, to clarify provisions regarding disparate impact actions, and for other purposes.

  • The Age Discrimination in Employment Act of 1967 -- ADEA
    Prohibits employment discrimination based on age against persons 40 years of age or over.

  • The Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 -- ADA
    Prohibits employment discrimination on the basis of disability.

  • Sections 501 and 505 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973
    Prohibits employment discrimination of persons with disabilities in the federal sector.

  • The Equal Pay Act of 1963 - EPA
    Prohibits wage discrimination on the basis of sex (gender).

  • Chapter 216 of the Iowa Code
    Mirrors Title VII at the state level.

  • City Ordinance 24-94
    Mirrors Title VII at the local level.
