Description:
- The former Cedar Rapids Animal Shelter was destroyed by the June 2008 flood
- The new Cedar Rapids Animal Care & Control facility will be constructed on the Kirkwood College Campus
- The new facility accomodates up to 43 dogs and 124 cats for the Cities of Cedar Rapids and Marion
- The new facility will include a new central lobby, adoption mall, separate "get acquainted" rooms, species separation holds and a 900 square foot dual purpose training classroom
- Location will provide ready access to I-380 and Hwy 30, which will allow efficient response routes to all areas of the community as well as Marion
Estimated Timeline:
- July 2012 - Design complete
- June 2013 - Construction begins
- July 2013 - New facility opens
Funding Sources:
- $1 million FEMA repair funds
- $3.55 million Local Sales Option Tax funds
Project Cost Estimate: $4.55 million*
*FEMA is also providing $700,000 for demolition of the flood-damaged facility and $100,000 to replace the contents of the former facility.
