The Cedar Rapids City Council consists of eight council members plus the Mayor. The Mayor and three Council members are elected at large. The remaining five Council members are elected by voters of their district. The City Council operates on a part-time basis and meets regularly in regular session. All nine Council members are to be elected, including the Mayor.
All Council members shall be elected for four-year terms unless otherwise specified in the City Charter. Specifically, the term of the council member elected at large for the term beginning on January 2, 2014 that received fewer votes than the other member elected at large will be elected for a two year term. All subsequent terms for that office of council member shall be for four years.
